It appears like Usher is getting closer to making a comeback. On one Thursday, the R&B superstar issued a brand new single, “No Limit,” entirely to Tidal.

The slinky single, including rapper Young Thug, takes its name from Master P’s now-defunct rap label — and there are loads of references to the one-time Southern rap empire.

“, no limit / Got Master, no limit baby-mp3-download/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer” title=”baby”>baby,” he sings about the enchanting track.

Created by Brandon “B.A.M.” Hodge and Christopher Perry, “No Limit” is the singer’s first new single since 2015’s strong “Chains,” which was motivated by ongoing protests of racial injustice across the U.S. and also a heavy death from his trademark wooing.

“No Limit” and “Chains,” which was also a Tidal exclusive, are expected to be included on his forthcoming record, “Flawed.”

“Flawed” is your long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s”Seeking 4 Myself,” which the singer has spent the past three years teasing.

There have been a number of false starts for the record, Usher’s eighth — a rarity for the celebrity who has enjoyed tightly executed rollouts.

Back when the album was called “UR” (his initials, for the unaware), he released funky R&B throwback “Great Kisser” among a handful of documents such as “I Do not Mind,” a ridiculous Dr. Luke-produced ballad about strippers that’s better suited for his younger imitators.

Give you that ghetto D girl, no limit
Just know when you roll with a nigga like me

In video clips and his tunes, Usher situates himself in An Atlanta of skyscrapers and strip clubs, and he could be as brazenly materialistic as his hip contemporaries, singing about luxury cars and champagne.

In “No Limit,” Usher displays hip credentials by mixing extravagant guarantees with references to No Limit, the New Orleans hip-hop label that thrived from the 1990s.

He appears as a tricky and penitent seducer, but Usher Makes himself and his listeners comfortable, in which merit is impure, and temptation requires countless forms.

It might be a blingy spending spree  (“No Limit,” Let Me”). A no-questions-asked liaison (“Downtime”) or an offer of commitment (“Rivals”); it might be the guarantee of sultry pleasures (“Bump” or”FWM”) or a hypothetical bit of impatient lust (“Missin U,” which assembles its chorus on Steely Dan guitar chords).

While “No limit” does not include a song as cathartic as Usher’s”Climax,” out of 2012, it’s packed with smaller satisfactions.

The hip era has not been kind to R&B crooners like Usher. Some have attempted to recast themselves as macho guys or proceeded toward clinically explicit sex tunes; others have been demoted to singing hooks while others rappers grab the spotlight.

But Usher’s more profound charm is a more old-fashioned sense of yearning. “Crash,” one of the record’s earliest sisters, brings out Usher’s gentlest falsetto within a subdued synthesized parade – mostly just a bass line and blips – because he implores, “Do you mind if I loved one?”

He has All of the gifts and skills he needs, beginning with a Genuinely expressive voice that encircles a warm croon, a soft falsetto, and fast, singsong declamation that sets him at the edge of rapping. Usher also includes a canny psychological sensitivity in his lyrics, a warrior’s physical elegance, and an ear for up-to-the-minute digital productions, which hot into his voice. “No limit” is full of synthesizer bass lines and the shallow, spattering percussion of the trap. Usher utilizes his talk of Auto-Tune and choppy digital edits; his tunes are aimed at radio. However, he and his collaborators fill the electronic spaces with vocals: syncopated flurries in ”FYM,” undulating pleas at “Rivals,” and long-breathed whispers and imploring falsetto declarations at ”Tell Me”, the album’s most relaxing and passionate tune.

It is a shame that it doesn’t include ”Chains,” a 2015 single (with Nas and Bibi Bourelly) that reacted to police shootings and attached it to the Dark Lives Issue motion. Two songs at the end of the album celebrate triumph over hardship: “Stronger,” driven by an Afro-Caribbean beat, and”Champions,” a bilingual tune from the boxing movie ”Hands of Stone,” with Usher (who plays Sugar Ray Leonard in the film) joined by Rubén Blades. Usher gives them all his vocal skills. However, he sounds out of place if he’s not singing one-piece.

No one transforms an apology to some come-on longer suavely than It’s a deception he perfected as far back as 2004 with ”Confessions,” that became his best-selling album. Some honest contrition, a petition for mercy, a charm to some longtime bond, a reminder of chemistry and iola – he’s sweet-talked his Way to another opportunity.

“No limit” starts with Usher talking a dull, three-word Mea culpa in”Need U.” Still, he is not even done with the first verse before he’s started his defense, arguing, “You hate to admit it, but you’d still take me back” Soon enough, he is attempting to turn his remorse into a selling point: “I’ll take the blame, that counts for something/Man up and say I’ll have my errors.”

That’s not the only show of regret on”No limitation.” The name song, with Usher, mainly singing over the picking of a lone guitar, puts a Michael Jackson annoyance in his voice since he warns that he’s”difficult to trust” and that loving him is a bet. Then again, he concludes, “you can win everything.”

Makes himself and his listeners comfortable there, where virtue is impure, and temptation takes countless forms. While”No limitation” does not include a tune as cathartic as Usher’s”Climax,” out of 2012, it is packed with smaller satisfactions.

Bottom Line

Not one of the singles got the type of focus his releases typically garner. He aligned with soft drink and breakfast brands to give away tracks.

Usher as well teased the album with an arena tour, 2014’s that the UR Experience, that was as confounding because it was flashy.

“Flawed” doesn’t have a launch date, but the singer is reportedly prepping a July release.
